Understanding Macular Degeneration

AMD is a condition that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp vision. This essential region of the eye can be compromised in two primary forms: dry macular degeneration and wet macular degeneration, with the latter being the more severe and visually threatening type.

Dry Macular Degeneration

Most cases we diagnose in our Milwaukee office are dry macular degeneration. This common form of AMD is characterized by the presence of drusen, small yellow deposits beneath the macula. Over time, these deposits can lead to vision changes and central vision loss.

Wet Macular Degeneration

The wet form of AMD is characterized by the growth of abnormal blood vessels beneath the macula. These new blood vessels can leak, causing sudden vision changes, distorted vision, and—if left untreated—severe vision loss.

Diagnosis and Monitoring

At 414 Eyes in Milwaukee, we utilize cutting-edge technology to diagnose macular degeneration. Our optical coherence tomography, or “OCT” exam provides a thorough scan of the layers at the back of your eye, allowing us to detect even the subtlest changes. This advanced technology is crucial for early diagnosis and effective treatment planning for both dry and wet AMD.
